Step 4 of 6 • Diagnostic Step

Feel Towards: Assessing Self-Energy

The fourth ‘F’ is the most essential diagnostic check in Internal Family Systems therapy. When you ask yourself, “How do I feel toward this part right now?”, your response reveals whether you are in your core Self or if another protector part is blended with you.

Operating from Core Self

The 8 C's Present

If your feelings toward the part embody Curiosity, Compassion, Calm, Clarity, Connectedness, Confidence, Courage, or Creativity, you are centered in Self-energy and ready to relate.

Blended with Another Protector

Unblending Required

If you feel frustrated, annoyed, afraid, critical, or eager to fix/change the part, another protector has blended with you. Gently ask that second part to step back before proceeding.

05
Step 5 of 6 • Building Trust

Befriend: Cultivating Safety & Appreciation

Protector parts work endlessly to guard you from pain and emotional overwhelm. Before a protector allows access to the vulnerable Exile it protects, it must feel respected, heard, and appreciated for its hard work.

How to Befriend Your Protective Parts:

  • 1. Validate Positive IntentRecognize that even extreme behaviors (anxiety, anger, perfectionism) come from a desire to keep you safe.
  • 2. Inquire About HistoryAsk how long it has been doing this job and what it experiences while protecting you.
  • 3. Offer Genuine ThanksExpress gratitude for its dedication in shielding you during past painful experiences.
06
Step 6 of 6 • Exile Access

Fear: Uncovering the Protected Exile

The final ‘F’ unlocks the gateway to deep healing and unburdening. Ask the protector: “What are you afraid would happen if you stopped doing this job?”

Uncovering the protector's core fear brings light to the vulnerable Exile being guarded. Once the protector sees that the adult Self is present, calm, and capable of caring for the Exile, it can safely allow the Self to witness and heal the underlying trauma.

Frequently Asked Questions about the 6 F's in IFS

What if I don't feel curiosity toward a part?

If you feel anger, frustration, or fear toward a part, you are blended with a reactive protector. Kindly acknowledge that reactive part and ask if it would be willing to step back temporarily so you can get to know the target part without bias.

How long does it take to move through all 6 F's?

The process is non-linear and operates at the pace of your parts. Some protectors may require multiple sessions in the ‘Befriend’ stage before they feel safe enough to share their ‘Fear’.

What is the difference between Episode 1 and Episode 2?

Episode 1 focuses on finding and recognizing the part (Find, Focus, Flesh out), while Episode 2 guides you through building a relationship of trust and uncovering the protector's deeper fears (Feel, Befriend, Fear).

Can I practice the 6 F's on my own?

Yes! Self-guided IFS practice using journaling or guided apps (like the IFS Guide App) allows you to practice unblending and befriending your protective parts daily.
