Traumatic Responses

Video Lesson

Traumatic responses are the extreme ways our internal parts react to overwhelming experiences. In IFS, we view these not as pathologies, but as survival strategies that were once necessary.

The Spectrum of Response

When trauma occurs, our system often splits. Exiled parts carry the raw pain and fear, while protectors (managers and firefighters) develop intense responses to keep that pain from surfacing. Common traumatic responses include hyper-vigilance, dissociation, and emotional numbing.

Healing through IFS

IFS provides a safe framework for approaching these responses. Instead of trying to "stop" the behavior, we get curious about the parts involved. By unblending from the intense response and witnessing the story of the exiled part, the system can begin to release the trauma and find its way back to balance.

Watch the video above to understand how IFS can help you navigate traumatic responses and foster deep, lasting emotional healing.
