In Internal Family Systems, Exiles are the parts of us that have been wounded, often in childhood, and then sequestered away by our protectors to prevent us from feeling their pain.
These parts often carry "burdens"—extreme beliefs or emotions such as "I am unlovable," "I am worthless," or intense feelings of terror and loneliness.
Characteristics of Exiles:
- Vulnerability: They are our most sensitive and often youngest parts.
- Pain-Carrying: They hold the memories of trauma, rejection, or neglect.
- Isolation: They are kept "exiled" by managers and firefighters to keep the system stable.
Healing exiles is at the heart of IFS. When we can approach an exile with Self-energy (curiosity and compassion), we can witness their story, help them release their burdens, and bring them back into the "family" of our internal system.
