Often, our Parts communicate through the body long before they speak in thoughts or words. That "knot in your stomach" or "tightness in your chest" isn't just stressβit's a Part of you trying to get your attention. π§ π‘
By bringing awareness to these somatic experiences, we can bypass the intellectual "protective" layers of the mind and go straight to the heart of our inner system.
Five Core Practices of Somatic IFS ββ¨
Somatic Awareness π
Cultivating a steady, non-judgmental observation of internal physical states and movements.
Conscious Breathing π¬οΈ
Using the breath to regulate the nervous system and create space for Parts to emerge and be seen.
Radical Resonance π
Experiencing the 'felt sense' of Self-energy within the body, creating a physical vibration of compassion.
Mindful Movement π
Allowing Parts to express themselves through subtle or large movements, helping them release stored energy.
Somatic Touch π€
Using gentle self-touch or awareness of physical boundaries to provide comfort and safety to young or wounded Parts.
The "Felt Sense" π‘οΈπ§
Understanding how your body speaks the language of your soul.
Vibrational Clues
Notice the 'quality' of a sensation. Is it sharp, dull, cold, or buzzy? These nuances help identify specific Parts.
Protective Armor
Chronic tension in shoulders or jaw often reveals 'Manager' parts that are constantly on guard for you.
Self-Resonance
When you are in 'Self', the body often feels spacious, grounded, and warm. This is your 'Home Base'.
A Simple Somatic Check-In π§ββοΈβ¨
Settle In π§
Close your eyes and take three deep, slow breaths. Notice where your body meets the chair or floor.
Scan the Landscape πΊοΈ
Slowly scan from head to toe. Notice any areas of tightness, warmth, emptiness, or buzzing.
Stay with One π
Choose one sensation that feels most present. Don't try to change it. Just say: 'I'm noticing you.'
Be Curious π€
Ask the sensation: 'If you could express a feeling or a message, what would it be?' Wait for a response from your body, not your head.
