The Intent Behind the Noise 🛡️🔊
It might seem strange, but the Inner Critic actually believes it is helping you. Most critics are trying to:
Preventing Pain
"If I criticize you first, it won't hurt as much when others do it." The critic tries to beat others to the punch to "insulate" you from external judgment.
Motivating Growth
"If I'm hard on you, you'll work harder and be successful." The critic often uses shame as a (highly ineffective) fuel for achievement.
Steps to Transform the Critic 🔄🧘
1. Unblend
When you hear the critical voice, recognize it as a Part, not the truth of who you are. Say: 'I notice a part of me is being very critical right now.'
2. Feel Toward
How do you feel toward this critic? If you feel annoyed or defensive, ask those parts to step back so you can meet the critic with Curiosity.
3. Ask the 'Why'
Ask the critic: 'What are you afraid would happen if you stopped being so hard on me?' Listen for the underlying fear.
4. Appreciate the Intent
Even if you don't like its methods, thank the part for its desire to protect you. This appreciation is the key to trust.
