In the IFS model, our internal system is composed of three main types of sub-personalities. Understanding these roles is the first step toward internal harmony.
Exiles
The young, wounded parts that have been isolated to protect the system from their overwhelming pain.
Managers
Proactive protectors that try to keep the system safe by controlling the environment and relationships.
Firefighters
Reactive protectors that jump in to distract from pain when Exiles are triggered.
How these parts interact
Managers are preventive, working to keep life stable, while Firefighters are reactive, rushing in to douse emotional flames. Both exist to keep the Exiles safe from harm.
