What are Parts in IFS

Tiny people living within your consciousness, each with their own story.

Video Lesson

Parts are like tiny people living within your consciousness. They each have their own feelings, beliefs, and personalities, interacting with other Parts just like real people do. Think of the characters in Disney’s Inside Out—that’s the perfect analogy! 🎥

What Makes Parts Special? 💖

IFS sees the mind as naturally multiple, with Parts playing key roles in our inner lives. These aren’t just fleeting thoughts or passing emotions—they’re rich, complex aspects of ourselves that can hold:

Memories

Past experiences and events.

Motivations

Our drives and desires.

Protections

Strategies to keep us safe.

How Do Parts Help Us? 🛠️

In IFS, we believe that there are no bad Parts. Not even the ones causing anxiety, shame, or self-doubt!

😨 An Anxious Part

Might hope to protect you from embarrassment or rejection. Its intention is purely to keep you safe from social pain.

🍕 A Soothing Part

Might step in when things get too overwhelming, encouraging behaviors like overeating or scrolling to bring temporary relief.

The Three Types of Parts 🎭

Understanding the roles our internal family members play.

Exiles 🚪💔

Wounded, younger Parts carrying painful emotions like shame, fear, or loneliness. They are often locked away to protect the system from their pain.

Managers 🗂️💼

Proactive Parts that plan, control, and criticize to shield Exiles from pain and prevent traumatic situations from repeating.

Firefighters 🚒🔥

Reactive Parts that jump in when Managers fail. They use impulsive strategies like rage or indulgence to quickly numb intense pain.
