What is Burden in IFS?

Understanding and releasing the emotional weights carried by your parts.

Video Lesson

The Weight of the Past ⚓

In Internal Family Systems (IFS), a Burden is an extreme belief or emotion that a part has taken on as a result of a past traumatic or overwhelming experience.

Burdens are not the parts themselves; they are like emotional "heavy luggage" that parts carry. Releasing these burdens (a process called unburdening) allows parts to return to their natural, healthy states. Watch the video above to learn more about how to identify and release these weights.

Understanding Burdens:

How They Form

Burdens are often acquired in childhood during moments of fear, shame, or neglect.

Types of Burdens

They can be emotional (terror, worthlessness) or cognitive (beliefs like 'I am unlovable').

The Unburdening Process

A collaborative ritual with the part to release the energy to elements like fire, secondary, or air.

Healing & Transformation

Once unburdened, the part discovers its true qualities—like joy, creativity, or strength.
