In many spiritual and psychological traditions, the "ego" is seen as something to be defeated or transcended. In Internal Family Systems (IFS), we take a different approach.
What we typically call the "ego" is often a collection of Manager parts. These parts are responsible for our day-to-day functioning, social image, and safety. They work tirelessly to prevent us from feeling pain or shame.
The IFS Perspective on Ego:
- Not an enemy: The ego is not something to get rid of; it is a set of parts with positive intentions.
- Befriending over fighting: By befriending these protective parts, we can help them relax and step back, allowing our core Self to lead.
- Self-Energy: When the ego (protectors) steps back, we access Self-energy—qualities like calm, curiosity, and compassion.
Understanding the ego in this way allows for deep self-compassion. Instead of being "ego-driven," we can become "Self-led," leading to a more harmonious and authentic life.
