In Internal Family Systems, polarization occurs when two parts (or groups of parts) have opposing views or strategies regarding how to protect the system or handle a situation.
When parts are polarized, they often get stuck in a "tug-of-war." The more one part pushes its agenda, the more the other part reacts and pushes back. This internal conflict can lead to feelings of being stuck, indecisiveness, or intense emotional distress.
Key Signs of Polarization:
- Feeling "split" between two very different choices.
- Extreme reactions (e.g., intense productivity followed by total burnout).
- Self-criticism regarding certain behaviors or feelings.
Healing polarization involves the core Self witnessing both sides without judgment, helping them understand each other's positive intent, and finding a middle path that honors the needs of the whole system.
