Unburdening is the core healing process in Internal Family Systems. It is the moment when a part of you finally releases the heavy emotional weight it has been carrying for years.
What are Burdens?
Burdens are extreme beliefs or emotions that parts pick up from traumatic or difficult experiences. These might include feelings of worthlessness, intense fear, or the belief that "I am not safe." These burdens aren't who the part is; they are things the part carries.
The Process of Release
Through the IFS process, the Self witnesses the part's story and offers the compassion it never received. Once the part feels truly seen and safe, it can choose to release its burden to the elements (light, secondary, earth, or wind). This makes room for the part's natural qualities—like joy, playfulness, or wisdom—to return.
Watch the video above to see how unburdening can transform your internal world and lead to lasting emotional freedom.
